How Do You Track Referral Conversion?

Referral conversion reporting helps a medical practice understand what happens after a referral is received.

A referral tracking workflow can record:

  1. Referral received
  2. Referral source
  3. Patient contact attempt
  4. Patient contacted
  5. Appointment scheduled
  6. Appointment completed

The practice can then calculate conversion based on the specific stage it wants to measure.

For example:

Scheduled Referral Conversion = Referrals Scheduled ÷ Referrals Received × 100

A practice may also measure completed-appointment conversion separately.

Referral reports can be organized by physician, practice, facility, specialty, location or month.

This information can help identify referral sources that generate completed appointments and reveal where patients are being lost during the referral process.

The most important requirement is a consistent definition of each referral stage.
